New students: the first lesson is a free 30 minute consultation/trial lesson. Why not try an introductory semester of harp or violin? In a "jumpstart" semester you will learn many tunes and the foundation of great technique during weekly private lessons, with additional group lessons. No previous musical experience is necessary, and new students can begin at anytime. Weekly private lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes long, depending on the level of the student. Online lessons are available to supplement studio lessons.
Adults: “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis
Yes, I welcome adult students, both beginners or those who've had previous instruction. It's a privilege to help adults achieve the music they want to play! We all need a creative outlet in our work-life balance, and it's rewarding to begin that new journey with an adult student.

"When I (as an adult) began harp lessons with Ruth, I barely read music and played no other instruments. I am very thankful for Ruth's patience and skills as a teacher. Her ability to 'translate' even complex music into patterns that are recognizable and easier to memorize always amazes me."--B.N. |
"As a very late bloomer, I found Ruth's harp teaching inspired. Now I can play the harp" -D.B. My oldest daughter started harp lessons with Ruth a few years ago and her knowledge, experience, and approach has been invaluable. So much so, that now all four of my children take lessons with her: one on violin and two on piano. "--J.K. |
Harps for rent: I have harps available for rental during introductory "jumpstart" semesters and beyond, starting at $30-50 per month. Educating parents/students about the different types/sizes of harps suitable for their needs is a part of my curriculum.

What is the Suzuki Method?
More than fifty years ago Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki realized the implications of the fact that children the world over learn to speak their native language with ease. He began to apply the basic principles of language acquisition to the learning of music, and called his method the "mother-tongue" approach. The ideas of parent responsibility, loving encouragement, constant repetition are some of the special features of the Suzuki approach. Dr. Suzuki's goal was not simply to develop professional musicians, but to nurture loving human beings and help develop each child's character through the study of music.

Suzuki teachers believe that musical ability can be developed in all children.
Students can begin at young ages.
Parents play an active role in the learning process.
Children become comfortable playing music before learning to read music, as children learn to talk well before beginning reading.
Technique is taught in the context of pieces rather than through dry technical exercises.
Students perform frequently, individually and in groups.

I began lessons with Mrs. Giessen when I was ten years old. I already had four years of piano lessons under my belt, but Mrs. Giessen helped me develop true musicianship over the next eight years I took lessons from her. She set me up for a great college career as a music major. I would recommend her to anyone."--H.H.
